During the winter months on South Africa’s East coast there is a phenomenon known as the Sardine Run. It has been labeled as the equivalent of the great migrations of land animals in East Africa’s Kenya.
This migration is fast becoming one of the most famous events on a worldwide wide scale for both divers and nature lovers alike. Although little is known about why this amazing annual event occurs, cold waters of the Benguela Current play feature in the mass movement of the Sardines.
The beauty of this event is not just the sardines themselves; it is also the predators that join them on the "Run" that attracts so much attention! Birds like the Cape Gannet, Cormorants, Terns and Gulls are prolific and are great at indicting action from the surface. Amongst the chaos of the birds, it is estimated over 18,000 dolphins ‘round up” the sardines into bait balls of 10-20m diameter and 10m deep to feed on the sardines.
In turn these bait balls attract even more attention from sharks (like the Bronze Whaler, Duskies, Blacktips, Spinner sharks and even Zambezi / Bull sharks), game fish (like Shad, Mackerel, Garrick, Geelbek and Tuna) and the graceful presence of the whales (like Humpback and Brydes whale) add to the spectacular cast on the Sardine Run.
